Do Crash Diets Work?

As the world of business gets quicker and quicker we are seeing the same need for speed hitting different areas of our lives. The diet industry is one area in particular which has seen more and more demand for crash diets and almost immediate weight loss, but do they work and is it really healthy?

While it obviously depends on how much weight you need to loose, your lifestyle and often the situation of your health, there are very few situations where a crash diet can be recommended. Many people fall into the trap of thinking that once they have hit their weight loss target that is it, wrong!

For many people who are looking to lose weight there is a need to reorganise your lifestyle, your diet and your exercise program. A simple starvation diet may well see you drop the weight which you wanted to lose, but at what cost?

What is the point of starving yourself to lose weight in a very short space of time, and then going back to your normal eating habits after you have lost the weight, it will not be long before you are back in the same situation. What harm are you really doing your body by robbing yourself of the basic vitamins and nutrients which you and your body need to operate properly. Whether you are bang on your target weight or over weight, your body is a very complicated piece of equipment and something which needs to be respected. While we all eat things we know we should not eat, or over indulge time and again, there are no hard and fast rules about what you should and should not eat, everything in moderation.

In order to ensure that you are able to change your diet for the longer term you may also need to change certain aspects of your life style. If you drink too much alcohol then you would need to avoid going to the pub as often, if you eat too many sweets then do not have as many sweets around the house, etc. Very often we will indulge in comfort foods out of boredom, something which has been the case for many, but by maybe taking on a new sport or hobby, you can often take away the craving or comfort eating which can often be the cause of the weight gain.

Crash diets may deliver results for some people in the short term, but they are not the long term answer. Long term adjustments (some very minor) to your lifestyle can have an amazing affect on your diet, your weight and very often your outlook to life. By taking your time, picking a diet plan which is right for you and seeking support from those in the same boat as you, you can make it, it just takes some belief in yourself!
