The Health Benefits Of The Humble Pomegranate
While not necessarily the most common of fruits, the Pomegranate has come under much scrutiny over the last 12 months with regards to a number of potential health benefits. Aside from the fact that Pomegranates provide a good source of vitamin C and vitamin B it is their anti-oxidant agents which have become the talk of the health sector of late.
Even though many had been highlighting the powers of Pomegranate juice, it was not until recently that a number of scientific tests were carried out which revealed some very interesting results. It seems as though the anti-oxidants present in Pomegranates, which in simple terms stop the body's cells from degrading and possibly causing blockages and other potentially serious conditions, have been shown to have a material impact on such conditions as heart disease, LDL oxidation, arthritis, prostate cancer and diabetes to name but a few.
When you consider that some of the diseases mentioned above are amongst biggest killers in the developed world, it seems that these tests into the Pomegranate will be continuing for some time yet. Interestingly while Pomegranate juice has been found to assist the body in fighting various conditions, simple Pomegranate extracts have been found to be even more therapeutic. The extracts are being used more and more in diets as they contain no sugar, no calories and no additives, yet they are easy to digest and very healthy.
One more area which has the potential to have a major impact over the next decade or so is the antiviral and antibacterial power of the fruit, which is being talked about as potentially a major development in the dental world. Dental plaque is a major problem throughout the world and can lead to terrible episodes of gum disease, lost teeth and infections. If, as seems the case, Pomegranate extracts can in some way assist in fighting the build up of plaque, then this would be a major step forward in the fight against dental plaque.
If the truth be known, while there have been many scientific tests carried out over the last couple of years there are potentially many more uses for Pomegranate juice and extracts. They offer a natural protection to the body which very few other substances can offer, and one which is easy to digest and has been shown to have very few side effects. While maybe a little too early to say that it has the potential to change the face of the health industry, it certainly looks as though the humble Pomegranate may well become more popular in the not too distant future.
