Low Residue Diets
There have been many new diet introduced over the last few years although one which has been around for sometime is the low residue diet which is similar to the low fibre diet. In effect this is a diet which restricts the number of times a person visits the toilet by reducing the frequency and volume of stools produced.
|
In simple terms the low residue diet cuts out foods which increase bowel activity thereby reducing bowel movement, visits to the toilet and the production of body wastes. There are a number of foods which need to be avoided which include bread, pasta, cheese, raw vegetables, peas, berries, chocolate, caffeine, popcorn and nuts and seeds. Foods which are included in the low residue diet are white bread, cereals, well cooked vegetables, cooked meat, fish, eggs, butter, mayonnaise and broth or soup produced using allowed food.
As with any "non-traditional diets" there are followers who see no wrong with the diet and there are those who believe it reduces the intake of vitamins C, calcium and folic acid to below accepted levels. There are some people whom the diet may well suit and there are others who would find it very difficult to stick to such a strict and tough dietary regime.
