What Is The 100 Mile Diet?

The 100 Mile Diet is an interesting idea which was created back in 2005 by James MacKinnon and Alisa Smith of Canada and involves buying and easting food which is grown, manufactured and packaged within a 100 mile radius of your home. While there were many people who mocked the idea of the 100 Mile Diet it has taken on a new lease of life of late as consumer become more aware of the environment and the damage that mankind is doing in so many different ways.

The basis of the 100 Mile Diet was the fact that in the US the average distance from farm to plate for food is a massive 1,500 miles which create a large carbon footprint before the food is even at your table. Even though there is no strict dietary requirement to the 100 Mile Diet other than the fact the produce is sourced locally it has become something of a buzzword in the farming community with many now pushing the advantages to both the consumer and local business.

After the initial scepticism about the validity of a 100 Mile Diet the idea has been accepted in many areas of the world and created something of a local produce boom in some places. While it may not be your traditional diet as such, the 100 Mile Diet seems to have caught the imagination of the worldwide consumer. The 100 Mile Diet may also be referred to as the Fife Diet, the Low Carbon Diet or the Local Produce Diet, but they are all based upon the original diet.
